The use of cosmetics has become more and more widespread around the world. Not only are film stars and beauty bloggers use, but cosmetics also appear in ordinary people's daily lives. People only care about the bright and beautiful appearance brought by cosmetics, and they don't consider what to do with the remaining packaging after using cosmetics. Most people will choose to throw them away. However, with the increase of the discarded cosmetic packagings, the global environment will have an increasing impact. When people's awareness of cosmetics packaging recycling is not strong, we need our producers to control the use of raw materials for cosmetics packaging and use environmentally friendly materials to process and manufacture to show a strong understanding of the concept of environmental protection.

The promotion of environmentally friendly materials is imperative. So next, we will introduce the application of two environmentally friendly cosmetic packaging materials, PCR and sugarcane cosmetic packaging material.

PCR cosmetic packaging material

PCR cosmetic packaging

PCR, also named Post-consumer resin, is the technical term for recycled plastic. PCR osmetic packaging presents a new opportunity for companies looking for a more sustainable packaging option to offer their environmentally-conscious customer base. Essentially, plastic waste collected at local recycling centers is sorted, sterilized and repurposed into new packaging options specific to your unique needs. Post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin is the recycled product of waste created by consumers. Before the plastic waste is turned into the resin, the plastic materials are gathered and sent through a proprietary process to produce plastic resin pellets. Businesses that use PCR resins in their products enjoy countless benefits, including increased profits, cost savings, and improved brand image.

The bottles and cans are transported to the recycling station for recycling into bottle bricks and then shipped to the processing plant for material confirmation, re-certification, sampling and inspection of bottle brick impurities, manual sorting after unpacking, and then pouring into a crusher for crushing. After that, specific gravity sorting, then chip washing and dewatering, and finally the chip finished, products can be stored in bags.

The benefit of PCR cosmetic packaging

Positive Environmental Benefits

The original post-consumer resins (such as LDPE resins and polyethylene) were originally processed from fossil fuels and later turned into plastic. When these PCR resins are reused and converted into new products, no new fossil fuels are needed, which has an exponential impact on the environment.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, recycled plastic has a much smaller impact on the environment than virgin plastic. In fact, many studies have shown that recycled plastics have more than 25% less greenhouse gas/carbon emissions than virgin resins. The more PCR resins contained in the product, the greater the impact on the environment.

Advantageous price

In the past, the cost of post-consumer resins was higher than the new original resins. This can be attributed to a large amount of cleaning, sorting, and handling required to recapture the recycled resin.

However, as the overall cost of petroleum-based raw materials continues to increase, the cost of PCR cosmetic packaging material is expected to decrease. In addition, when more consumers recycle plastic, the law of supply and demand will make PCR resins extremely attractive compared to original resins.

Drawbacks of PCR cosmetic packaging

The most common complaints about PCR resins are occasional gray/yellow/black spots and gels in the material. Even so, when used in the correct application (such as an Ag film or trash bag), these subtle defects do not affect the overall function of the product, so it completely can be used as cosmetic packaging. Although the color of the PCR cosmetic packaging may vary slightly, it can be solved by choosing a reliable supplier.

In both cases, the occasional cosmetic packaging's color change can show the environmental impact of using these more environmentally friendly products. If marketing is right, your customers may be willing to pay more for these deficiencies, because they know that your company is moving towards environmental sustainability.

sugarcane cosmetic packaging material

sugarcane

Sugarcane is an example of a versatile and renewable crop that can be used as a clean source of energy and as a raw material for the production of multiple products. Sugarcane cosmetic packaging material is a bio-renewable ingredient extracted from sugarcane. Sugarcane fiber has the advantages of biodegradability, low price, renewable, etc.. And it has high strength and high crystallinity, so comprehensive and efficient use of sugarcane fiber, can fully and reasonably use resources, alleviate the problems caused by the shortage of forest resources. In addition, sugarcane cosmetic packaging can also reduce the use of petrochemical fibers and reduce environmental pollution.

Production process of sugarcane packaging

Everything begins at the plantation, sugarcane captures CO2 from the atmosphere, during its natural photosynthesis process. The sugarcane is harvested and sent to mills that convert it into ethanol and sugar; the bagasse from the sugarcane is used to make bioenergy, to meet the needs of the energy demand of the cities. The ethanol used to make the factory's green polyethylene helps capture and sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. To give you a better understanding, the production of 200 thousand tons of green polyethylene represents an annual reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere of some 950 thousand.

So, the ethanol is transported to be converted into green ethylene through a process developed by the factory, from this point forward, the process used to make green polyethylene follows the same process as that used to make conventional polyethylene. Upon arriving at the client, green polyethylene is processed, using the same equipment used to process conventional polyethylene to maintain the process and the quality of the final products, with no need to invest in new machinery and equipment.

Green polyethylene allows it to be used to make a wide array of products that today can be found in Brazil, Europe, Asia, America, and Oceania. After consumption, products made from the factory's green polyethylene can be recycled using collection channels for recycling conventional polyethylene.

The benefit of sugarcane packaging

In the field of cushioning packaging materials, the use of polystyrene foam (EPS) and polyethylene (EPE) occupies a large share of our market. Although EPS and EPE have the advantages of lightweight and heat insulation, they are difficult to recycle after being discarded and difficult to degrade naturally, causing environmental pollution. The successful research and development of sugarcane cosmetic packaging buffer packaging materials will improve the use of bagasse waste, increase farmers' income, and reduce environmental pollution.

According to the research results, take out samples for physical and chemical analysis to further understand the physical and chemical structures of the sugarcane cosmetic packaging. Develop the processing method and feasible process, and then use the obtained technical parameters to test the buffer packaging material in the laboratory with the collected samples. After the materials are trial-manufactured, samples can be made according to the shapes of the packaging and shock-proof layers of commonly used household appliances and other products. After testing for common resistance and compressive strength, they can be compared with samples made of sugarcane cosmetic packaging materials. According to the experimental results, the samples made of sugarcane materials have reached and exceeded the control compressive strength of the samples. The compressive strength is the standard, which meets the packaging requirements of the packaging, and protects the safety of the product during the handling process.

You may still have some doubts, such as whether sugarcane cosmetic packaging material is health and safety, which will affect the cosmetics and use results. In fact, you don't need to worry about these issues. PCR and sugarcane material passed FDA certification. There should be no other materials that are healthier and safer than food.

Of course, environmental protection actions may not only be reflected in raw materials but more also reflected in behavior. For example, the recycling of empty bottle packaging initiated by some companies:

Estee Lauder's makeup line, MAC Cosmetics, offers shoppers the option of "Back-to-M · A · C" to return empty original packaging to participating stores. In exchange, the six returned cosmetics were empty and shoppers could get free eye shadows. The packaging is passed to the subcontractor who is responsible for recycling.

At Farfalla, a manufacturer of organic cosmetics and perfumes, shoppers can also return test tubes and bottles for the “Bring Back” campaign. This campaign is particularly useful because plastics in Switzerland cannot be disposed of in collection bins in household waste. Recycling partners process plastic containers into pellets. According to company statistics, each kilogram of plastic produced can save about one liter of crude oil and two kilograms of carbon dioxide.

The Austrian company Ringana has addressed the recycling of its packaging in a slightly different way. A total of ten completely emptied, pre-cleaned cosmetic glass bottles without pumps and caps must be mailed to the company by ordinary post and paid postage. The sender will then receive free cosmetics of their choice. The bottles are recycled and refilled in an environmentally friendly manner.

Whether the development of environmentally friendly packaging materials or the recycling campaign is very helpful for our environment. In addition, the development and promotion of environmentally friendly materials are of great benefit to major industries around the world.
